Project Management
Lee Abbey International Student Club (LAISC), Kensington, London W8.
Refurbishment of 195 bed, international student hostel to upgrade heating plant and provide additional bedrooms.
THE CHALLENGE:
LAISC is a charity that had run an international student hostel from this former hotel since the 1980s. The building required major capital expenditure but funds were tight. Trustees were also aware of the high alternative use value of the premises. Therefore the first task was to evaluate the strategic options, which ranged from comprehensive to partial refurbishment through to relocation and outright disposal.
OUTCOME:
Will worked with Trustees and their architect to evaluate the strategic options. This resulted in a decision to pursue a Phase 1 refurbishment. Plant and machinery were relocated on to the roof, which created space for 30 extra beds in the basement.
Will then acted as Client Project manager advising on the appointment of the professional team and the selection of a contractor to undertake the works. Completion on time was critical to deliver completed rooms for the summer bookings.
The project was delivered on time and within budget.
